‘Indian Farmers Burn PM Modi’s Effigy on 100th Day of Protests Against New Bill’

Farmers are protesting India for the 100th consecutive day over new agricultural laws that they fear will affect their business.

Thousands blocked a road in Delhi, burned effigies and chanted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

They fear a change to agricultural rules will bring an end to guaranteed prices for certain essential crops — a system that was introduced in the 1960s to help India shore up its food reserves and prevent shortages.

An overwhelming majority of Indian farmers sell only to government-sanctioned marketplaces, but many are concerned changing the system will leave them at the mercy of big corporations.
