Hundreds of Afghan refugees, mostly from the Hazara ethnic minority, demonstrated outside the UNHCR office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Demonstrators says they are afraid to go back home after the Taliban takeover and called for resettlement in third countries as Indonesia does not allow asylum seekers to work or have access to public schools and hospitals.

“Today we’ll get some result from UNHCR because everyone has been waiting for a long time in here, more than eight years then more than ten years. That’s why we’ve come here,” said one of protesters.

Hours later police intervened to disperse the rally for violating the COVID-related state of emergency.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Protester: “Today we get some result from UNHCR because everyone has been waiting for a long time in here, more than eight years then more than ten years. That’s why we’ve come here”

SOT, Protester: “We are tired to be staying in Indonesia, we want to go to the third country. We are transit here, not like more than ten years it is not fair. We just stagnant in Indonesia, we are human we just want from UNHCR to stop their business.”
