At least 19 people have died following a riot and fire in and outside a cafe in Sorong, West Papua on Tuesday.

“We are already going to identify a total of 17 bodies that were burned, one person died in a dispute outside the cafe location,” said Tornagogo Sihombing, West Papua Regional Police Chief Inspector General.

West Papua has long seen a low-level insurgency between Papuan separatists and Indonesian security forces though police said the two ethnic groups involved in the clashes were not Papuans.

Officers have been deployed in the city to prevent further clashes.
