A boat carrying dozens of Rohingya refugees has been pulled to safety following several days at sea, as seen at a port in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, on Thursday evening.

Refugees were pulled from the sea by the Indonesian Navy before having their temperature taken and being given COVID-19 masks.

The passengers were then taken in buses to a temporary shelter located in the Work Training Center (BLK) in Lhokseumawe.

Over 100 people had reportedly on board the vessel for several days, before they were finally allowed to enter the port due to a damaged engine.

The refugees were then handed over to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, who had urged for their ‘immediate, life-saving’ rescue on Thursday.

The government originally planned to leave the boat stranded but relented after protests from both locals and the international community.
