Sanousi Coulibaly is an incredible disabled karate master who runs a karate training centre called the ‘Jean Jacques Rousseau’ school, located south of Bamako, in Mali, as seen on Wednesday.
Pupils of all ages wearing belts of different colours could be seen lining up in the courtyard of the small school, while Sanousi Coulibaly started the session.
“Master is not a god, and the student is not a slave. We get together to learn and have fun,” said Sanousi at the end of the training.
Sanousi, affected by polio when he was three, never considered his disability a barrier. He began practicing at a young age, becoming a third dan black belt master, one of the highest ranks in Shotokan karate.
“What is striking and that I would like to emphasise is that the teacher does not consider himself disabled and that all other disabled people should be inspired by it,” said Aminata Traore, one of Sanoussi’s pupils.
Mali is considered one of the African countries with the highest rates of people affected by polio.

SOT, Sanoussi Coulibaly, Karate Shotokan Master (French): “My name is Sanoussi Coulibaly, I practice Shotokan Karate. I am based in Bamako, I learn and especially I teach karate, in addition to that, I am a jeweler.”

SOT, Sanoussi Coulibaly, Karate Shotokan Master (French): “I was not born disabled. I got polio when I was three years old. It is a fact of God and I took it with philosophy by saying that the handicap is not inevitable and that I am as capable as the able-bodied. And I intend to prove it with martial arts.”

SOT, Ibrahim Coulibaly, Sanoussi Coulibaly’s pupil (French): “I come to acquire knowledge from Sanoussi Coulibaly. Him and I had the same Master in the past, but he was above in rank and today although I run a karate centre, I come to Sanoussi to learn other techniques.”

SOT, Aminata Traore, Student of Sanoussi Coulibaly (French): “What is striking and that I would like to emphasise is that the teacher does not consider himself disabled and that all other disabled people should be inspired by it.”

SOT, Moussa Koita, Parent of Sanoussi Coulibaly’s student (French): “Sanoussi is the example which shows that the handicap is not inevitable in itself and that even being a bearer of a handicap, we can make ourselves useful. And the best part is that it doesn’t require anyone to pay a fee at the end of the month and my child is one of those people. So motivation is not money.”

SOT, Sanoussi Coulibaly, Karate Shotokan Master (French): “The Master is not a god, and the student is not a slave. We meet to learn and have fun and when it comes to seriousness, he does it with abnegation:”
