Archbishop Desmond Tutu who was instrumental in the fight against Apartheid in South Africa passed away in Cape Town on Boxing Day. He was 90 at the time of passing.

Archive footage shows Tutu visiting Brussels and meeting Claude Cheysson, member of the CEC in charge of Mediterranean Policy and North-South Relations on March 18, 1988 along with his wife. On November 17, 2006 Tutu delivered the closing speech of ‘European Development Days’ in Brussels. On 18 July 2013, then-President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso paid a visit to Desmond Tutu in Cape town.

Tutu was the first black Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town and was responsible for coining the term “Rainbow Nation” during Nelson Mandela’s presidency.

The Archbishop won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in combatting apartheid in his country.
