Dozens of Afghan asylum seekers were seen camping outside the German embassy in Tehran for the second day in a row as they seek refuge after fleeing from the resurgent Taliban.

The German embassy has reportedly not responded to any of the requests by the asylum seekers. The gathered people displayed their documents to prove they were from Afghanistan and had fled to nearby Iran, which has taken in a large number of refugees since the fall of Kabul.
“We ask the United Nations, we ask Germany to take care of the people. If you come at night, [you will see] people sleeping in the street, and during the day, [you see] them sleeping in the street,” implored one Afghan man.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas’s is currently visiting the region to discuss evacuation and protection strategies for those still stuck in Afghanistan and those fleeing the country, with neighbouring states.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), Iran is already home to an estimated two million undocumented Afghans as well as 780,000 Afghan refugees, who have fled their home country in the decades of conflict following the 1979 Soviet invasion.

SOT, Mohammad Samir Barati, Afghan asylum seeker (Farsi): “The US came and entered the country, ruled for twenty years, then left. It left the people for good. What should people do here now? We fled Afghanistan and came to Iran.”

SOT, Mohammad Samir Barati, Afghan asylum seeker (Farsi): “We ask the United Nations, we ask Germany to take care of the people. If you come at night, [you will see] people sleeping in the street, and during the day, [you see] them sleeping in the street. The door of the embassy is closed; they do not give any answer to the people.”

SOT, Fatemeh Ayoubi, Afghan asylum seeker (Farsi): “I am a university student. I have been a student in Iran for four years. Before the university started, the Iranian government received a letter of commitment from me that I would return to Afghanistan after completing my four-year bachelor’s degree. This is the situation in my country now. I will get my bachelor’s degree in another year. In this situation, where should I go back? Is my country now a safe place for me, a person who have studied [at the university]? If I return to Afghanistan now, the Taliban will force me to stay home. I mean, I spent 16 years trying to study so that I could return now and stay at home? This is the pain of all Afghan girls now.”

SOT, Faramarz Zamani, Afghan asylum seeker (Farsi): “It has been two months since I fled and came to Iran. My father was in the army, he was killed. I have four children. I came with my husband and now we live on the street. My children are babies too. Sometimes I do the house cleaning myself. We have no place to live and sleep. After hearing this news, we came and asked the German government to do something just for my four children. I have four children, two boys and two girls. My only demand is for my children. My daughter cannot study now. They do not accept her for the school. My son is also a preschooler. I can’t afford to let him go to preschool. That is why, I am asking the German government to help my four children.”

SOT, Hassan Samangani, Afghan asylum seeker (Farsi): “Ever since Kabul fell and the regime collapsed, all the people you see here are displaced. The responsibility for all this displacement lies with NATO member states that came to Afghanistan and left Afghanistan once again. It is the direct responsibility of the world not to leave the people of Afghanistan alone. In a wave of war and violence between barbarians and those who see violence and beheading as their duty, we call on the international community and the European Union, and the world as a whole not to leave Afghanistan. We all know that these displaced people, women and children, all fled from there, because they worked for the government, were active, like me, were journalists and writers, fled from the fear of the Taliban and came here.”
