Iran: 'Experience' of Rouhani admin shows 'trust in the West does not work' - Khamenei

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said that the experiences of the outgoing administration had shown that “trust in the West does not work,” as he met with President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet for the last time in Tehran on Wednesday.

“Domestic programs should not be postponed and conditioned according to the West, because it will definitely fail, it will definitely suffer,” said Khamenei, “Wherever you have made your work dependent on the West, you have failed. Wherever you stood and moved without trusting the West, you succeeded.”

The supreme leader warned future administrations not to make similar mistakes stating, “others should use your experiences - this is the experience of distrusting the West.”

President-elect Ebrahim Raisi will take office from Rouhani on August 5. Raisi, who won the recent presidential elections on June 18, is considered to be a conservative hardliner and close ally of Khamenei.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington on reviving the Iran nuclear deal were adjourned shortly after Raisi’s election victory, with no date yet announced for when a new round will begin.
