Iran: Fire destroys nearly 30 shops at historic Grand Bazaar in Tehran

A fire broke out at the historic Grand Bazaar in Tehran on Saturday morning, destroying about 30 shops and requiring the efforts of numerous emergency workers.

“There were seven or eight [gas] canisters here,” said Law Enforcement officer Heidari, Heydari, adding, “The incident was only due to this indiscipline and the fact that the fire brigade did not follow up to take out these canisters.”

Footage showed smoke billowing from a still-burning shop as firefighters climbed a ladder. The fire left debris covered in ash. Residents took photos of the damage. Firefighters, law enforcement officers, and health workers were on the scene.

“Five people were injured. Four of them received outpatient treatment and had no specific case at all,” said Tehran Emergency Technician Farzan.

According to local media, the amount of property damage was not yet known, but five people were reported injured. The Grand Bazaar was known as the more than three centuries old historical bazaar of the Iranian capital, divided into several long aisles of more than 10 kilometres, each specialised for different goods.

SOT, Jalal Maleki, Fire Department Spokesperson (Farsi): “At 7:38 this morning, a fire was reported in this area. In the first moments, seven fire stations were dispatched to the scene. Officials from District 12 [Tehran] Municipality Office, the Crisis Headquarters, and other relief organizations were present in the area. Tehran Municipality also sent several water tankers to the site.”

SOT, Jalal Maleki, Fire Department spokesperson (Farsi): “When we got here, the fire was completely burning. The fire was raging from the upper and lower floors. I think twenty to twenty-five shops were for 100 percent or less on fire. Occasionally, there were sounds of explosions coming from perfume containers and sprays. However, the fire was very widespread, and by the time firefighters arrived, many shops had caught fire.”

SOT, Shopkeeper whose shop has burnt in fire (Farsi): “Our shop has exploded. There is nothing left of it. It had two showcases outside. The shutters are destroyed. Upstairs, my office and everything was burnt. Next to our shop is a restaurant. I told him 10 to 15 times not to leave these [gas] canisters here. Can he come now to pay the damages? Can he, who has rented a shop, pay compensation to me, who has been here for 40 years? Can he pay for it?”

The incident was only due to this indiscipline and the fact that the fire brigade did not follow up to take out these canisters.”

SOT, Farzan, Tehran Emergency Technician (Farsi): “Five people were injured. Four of them received outpatient treatment and had no specific case at all. One of them had second-degree burns on his palm and face. Thank God, he did not have a special situation or emergency condition.”
