Iranian President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated the Goreh-Jask crude oil pipeline, a new national oil terminal in the Oman Sea, on Thursday, speaking in Tehran.
The $2 billion (€1.7 billion) project will allow Iranian tankers to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has been the centre of regional tension for years, and to have a new export terminal in the Oman Sea, and outside the Persian Gulf.
Rouhani stressed that the new oil terminal was an ‘important step’ to ‘secure the continuation of our oil exports,’ after experiencing several delays due to sanctions imposed by the former US Trump administration.
Rouhani also addressed Khuzestan’s water crisis protests, legitimising people’s right to demonstrate, calling for an urge to solve the water shortage and provide citizens with access to clean drinking water.

SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “Today’s opening is very important. It is perhaps the most important inauguration in the Eleventh and Twelfth Governments. This inauguration is, in fact, a very strong response to the conspirators and to the United States and to all those who think that Iran does not have a sustainable future.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “Today’s plan, which is a $2 billion (€1.7 billion) plan, shows the world that we can do it. In terms of investment, we allocated $2 billion (€1.7 billion) for a project. And we [were able to succeed] in the oil industry, which is very important to us and important to the enemy because it has sanctioned oil. Also, we have diversified the oil terminal, which was just Khark, and we no longer have just one terminal. We had one terminal, and if something went wrong, our oil exports were cut off.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “We also eliminated the need for the Persian Gulf in oil exports. This means that the Iranian government is able to export its oil from the Oman Sea at any time. And this is important. This is the first time. We always exported our oil from the Persian Gulf.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “Start the operation of the crude oil transfer pipeline from Goreh to Jask with a length of one thousand kilometres and the operation of the export terminal in Makran region, God bless it.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “I ask that if there is a problem, action be taken in the legal framework. Do not let our enemies be happy. Do not let those who are against Iran abuse a movement and a protest.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “The people of Khuzestan may be protesting. There is nothing wrong with protesting and criticising within the framework of the law. Some people come and say that there is a water shortage, why is it so, let’s solve the water problem. One might say that we have a sewage problem here. One might say that here the Hawizeh Marshes have dried up, here the river has dried up, here their livestock has problem. These are the rights of the people.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “We must separate the people of Khuzestan from those who sometimes utter incorrect words and slogans. Now those few hundred people are not [representing] Khuzestani people.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “People who live in temperatures of 50 degrees have a natural right to speak, to talk, to protest, even to come to the streets within the rules. Now, in the meantime, some may be exploiting (the situation). A person may come in the middle of the crowd, use a firearm, shoot, as one of our loved ones is killed.”
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): “A delegation was sent to Khuzestan. Problems were investigated. Although the plan they proposed was financially difficult for the government, we approved the whole plan in the government. I immediately said that this money will be paid to the province from wherever possible. Yesterday, I instructed the first deputy to go to Khuzestan in person for tomorrow and see the situation in Khuzestan up close once again, and if there is a problem, to make a decision there, and if necessary, to contact me so that we can resolve it.”
