Young couples took part in a mass wedding ceremony at Imam Hossein Square in Tehran on Monday.

Footage shows brides and grooms on stage as they tie the knot in the presence of clergymen and the public.

“I participated in this ceremony because I want to say that along with chastity, hijab, and cultural activities that we have in Iran, we can have a successful and simple marriage,” said Maryam Tajik, a participant in the ceremony.

Others noted the ongoing difficult economic and housing situation in Iran as motivation for what taking part in the ‘easy marriage’ ceremony.

The event commemorates the anniversary of the marriage of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima, the only daughter of the Prophet Mohammad, according to Shia Muslims.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Maryam Tajik, Local resident and marriage ceremony participant (Farsi): “I participated in this ceremony because I want to say that along with chastity, hijab, and cultural activities that we have in Iran, we can have a successful and simple marriage. Being a woman is not a reason for limitation, we can support the family and continue our cultural activities.”

SOT, Esmaiel Sohrabi, Local resident and marriage ceremony participant (Farsi): “Inflation and the economic situation in society have made marriage difficult. Young people who want to get married can easily get married, instead of having a luxurious wedding and if it is not because of luxury [ceremonies], and they find marriage easy.”

SOT, Mohammadreza Sabaie, Local resident and marriage ceremony participant (Farsi): “The celebration of easy marriage is to promote the culture of easy marriage and to tell others that in these conditions we have, young people can have an easy marriage by relying on God and following the example of the Imams. And so, with social distancing, in the open air, we came wearing masks so we wouldn’t get coronavirus and we could share that joy with others and be an easy marriage model.”

SOT, Samiram Abdi, Local resident and marriage ceremony participant (Farsi): “The issue of housing is a real problem for young people, and if this issue is resolved, marriages will become easier.”

SOT, Mobina Sadat Taghavi, Local resident and marriage ceremony participant (Farsi): “As a youth born in the 2000s, I expect them [the next government] to make things a little easier, to help provide some opportunities for young people to get married. Many young people are willing to have an easy marriage, but some do not have the minimum facilities. They must help these young people to get married and not deviate from the path they have chosen.”
