Iraq: Civil defence fights off huge fire at Shorja marketplace in Baghdad

Civil defence forces battled a huge fire that broke out in the popular Shorja marketplace in central Baghdad on Tuesday.

Huge material damages were seen in Shorja area; one of the oldest and biggest marketplaces in the Iraqi capital.

“The fire broke out in two, old, poorly-constructed, adjacent buildings made of brick and wood, which make them totally uninhabitable”, said Major-General Kazem Bohan, director of the local Civil defence.

“Everything there is irregularly constructed with no safety and security measures whatsoever. All these reasons contributed to the fire. We have managed to stop the fire from spreading to the nearby buildings, which are old and poorly constructed as well, and we continue to put out sporadic small fires. It is not completely over yet but the danger was eliminated”, he went on to say.
