Iraq: COVID vaccination campaign in Karbala continues as Ashura ceremony approaches

On Tuesday, health centres in Karbala witnessed a flock of citizens wishing to receive COVID-19 vaccines, at a time when the city authorities launched their health plan in preparation for the Ashura ceremonies.

People could be seen heading to receive vaccinations at a health centre that provides three types of them: Sinopharm, Pfizer-BioNTech, and AstraZeneca.

Dr Nibras Tariq Al-Naqib, who works in the health centre, indicated that the vaccination campaign has no direct relationship to the visiting period during the religious occasion.

“The campaign has nothing to do with the visit period, meaning that the vaccine will not protect the visitor during the visit period, since the first dose gives a protection ratio between 30 and 50 percent of infection, and the second dose needs three weeks to activate the immune system, so when we vaccinate the visitor during the visit period, this does not protect him from infection, but the visitor must commit to wearing a mask.”

For his part, a man said after receiving the vaccine: “We urge citizens to take the vaccine, the dispensary here cooperates with us and the medical staff as well. We call on citizens to take the vaccine to protect their families, visitors and people in general.”

Governmental measures include deploying health monitoring teams and vaccinating workers participating in Ashura preparations, in addition to setting up public and private hospitals and establishing additional health facilities.

Iraq is facing a significant increase in the number of daily infections with the coronavirus, as the country recorded 9,970 new cases on Tuesday, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Health. The total number of infections in Iraq has hit 1,732,298 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of course, we have provided vaccines to limit the spread of this dreaded epidemic. Therefore, we call on citizens to adhere to the vaccination dates to limit the spread of this virus”.

Today we came to receive the vaccine as we are about to receive million visitors from different governorates and countries. So we urge citizens to take the vaccine, the dispensary here cooperates with us and the medical staff as well. We call on citizens to take the vaccine to protect their families, visitors and people in general”.
