A mass was held in the ancient Mar Gorgis monastery in Mosul, Friday, on the occasion of its inauguration as it was reconstructed after it had been destroyed by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Footage shows a group of Iraqi clerics and officials attending the mass, which was presided over by Archbishop Mar Mikhail Najib Mikhail and attended by mayor of Mosul district Zuhair Al-Araji.

The Metropolitan of one of the churches of Mosul said on the occasion: “Today we consecrated the church of the Mar Gorgis Monastery in Mosul, which was reconstructed. This step and this blessing is certainly an important message for all of the Mosuli community, especially for the Christians who were expelled from this city.”

In turn, one of the monks expressed his confidence that the Christian people of Mosul would return to it “if places return, reconstruction and work return.”

Considered to be the most ancient church of the town, Mar Gorgis was first restored in 1681, then completely demolished and later rebuilt in 1906.

The monastery was then destroyed by the so-called Islamic State in 2015 after it took control of Mosul in 2014.

The pro-government forces were able to regain the place after liberating the left side of Mosul in 2017.

Today was special, and we wished for the presence of our displaced Christian brothers with us. We hope that they can return and live in the arms of their homeland, their churches, and their families.”

SOT, Khaled Naim, Resident (Arabic): “Seven years after we were displaced from the beloved city of Mosul, we returned today to celebrate the opening of the Mar Gorgis Church and Monastery, and all this became possible thanks to the security forces, the popular crowd and the good people of Mosul, and today we are very happy on this occasion.”
