RT Arabic correspondent Ashraf al-Azawe was detained by the country’s security forces on Tuesday, as his work permit had allegedly expired. At the time of publication of this material, RT is in contact with authorities, trying to find out and confirm the official reason for the detention.

RT Arabic has been working in Baghdad with journalist Ashraf al-Azawe since 2008. According to the channel, “Ashraf covers events in the country as a correspondent, interactions take place through the Newstime company. The provider provides information services, including an office for Ashraf’s work.”

Equipment from the office was also reportedly confiscated.

Al-Azawe has interviewed many high-ranking officials in Iraq, including Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi and Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in 2006-2014.

The RT correspondent became a laureate of the al-Ghadir media festival and was also awarded the honorary badge of the Iraqi Ministry of Defence.

Human rights organisations in Iraq expressed their solidarity with the detained journalist and called for his immediate release.
