Residents of Tawella town, located in the Iraqi part of the Hawraman region, shared their thoughts after the ‘cultural landscape’ of the area was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The serene rural life of the people of Tawella, as well as their stones houses, and some of their traditional crafts and industries, could be seen on Sunday.

“Hawraman is 2000 years old, its character differentiates it from the rest of Kurdistan. There was no agriculture or other business in Tawella, but woods of nuts and other fruits, people used to market what they collected and produced, and export to other areas as their source of livelihood,” a local explained.

The area “included 20 to 30 knitting machines, 30 to 40 seamstresses, 200 to 300 cordwainers, and many blacksmiths,” he added.

Last Tuesday, July 27, the World Heritage Committee has inducted 13 cultural sites, including the Hauraman region, onto UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

According to the UN organisation, the region has been inhabited since about 3000 BCE, with the semi-nomadic Hawrami people adopting distinctive modes of living in order to deal with the rugged mountainous landscape.
