‘Islamic State Claim Responsibility For Deadly Attack on Palma in Mozambique’

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on Palma, Mozambique.

The town is in the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado in the north of the country.

Dozens of civilians were killed, including seven foreign workers.

A British contractor is still missing after the attack on the coastal town.

Philip Mawer had joined a convoy of vehicles attempting to flee the ambush.

The IS group released a video on Monday apparently showing fighters before the assault.

It’s unclear how closely affiliated these insurgents are to the jihadists operating in the Middle East.

In a statement, they claimed the attack “resulted in controlling the city after killing at least 55.”

Palma has been the site of deadly fighting between the Mozambican army and rebel fighters since 2017.

The three-year insurgency has taken more than 2,600 lives and displaced an estimated 670,000 people.
