Doctors and medical staff gathered outside of the Ministry of Health in Jerusalem on Sunday to protest against a lack of funding for public hospitals.

Medical personnel were seen wearing scrubs whilst holding signs calling for a budget increase as well as waving Israeli flags.

Professor Yoram Weiss explained that the demonstrators were there ‘because of the allocations of funds by the government of Israel’, adding, “What we are asking is to get a reasonable allocation of funding that will allow us to provide the same level of care as is provided in other areas of the country.”

The seven hospitals involved in the protest have been working on ‘emergency mode’ for several days, only accepting those requiring life-saving treatment.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Professor Yoram Weiss: “We are here today because of the financial constraints that independent, not-for-profit organisation hospitals are finding themselves in today in Israel. This is because of the allocations of funds by the government of Israel, and what we are asking is to get a reasonable allocation of funding that will allow us to provide the same level of care as is provided in other areas of the country.”

SOT, Doctor Nael Elias: “For many years, we have suffered from not getting the budget to maintain our facilities and our service, our health service, to all our patients in the area.”
