Israeli Tanks May Have Just Cut Gaza in Half

Israel may have started dividing northern and southern Gaza using its ground forces.

Since Israel cut off internet access in Gaza, the media mostly only has access to Israeli military footage. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has released a series of videos it claims shows the ground offensive is well underway. But the IDF has refused to comment on where any of their forces might be positioned, or how far into Gaza they are now operating.

This widely shared clip showing an Israeli tank opening fire on a vehicle has been verified by a number of media outlets. The journalist filming the incident claimed it was a civilian vehicle, but this has not been verified. The IDF have not yet commented on the incident.

It’s been reported that the tank was positioned on the Salah al-Din Road that connects Gaza City to southern parts of Gaza. This may indicate Israel is now ‘tightening the noose’ around Gaza City, cutting it off from the rest of the territory.

Tens of thousands of people have remained in Gaza City despite Israel ordering people to evacuate further south. Representatives of the Al-Quds hospital in Gaza City say it would be impossible for them to evacuate their patients. This is despite a direct warning to evacuate by the IDF, and with airstrikes having landed around the hospital in recent days.

But if the IDF is now blocking roads south, it’s unclear what routes civilians in Gaza City are still able to use to evacuate.
