Italy: 30,000 Inter fans return to San Siro for season opener

Inter Milan fans returned to the San Siro stadium on Saturday. Inter hosted the first game of the 21/22 Serie A season with fans finally allowed to return.

30,000 fans had their first San Siro experience since COVID restrictions had limited Italian football to be played in empty stadiums for the past 18 months.

“It’s truly a unique emotion. Coming back after such a long time and seeing live football and the fans in the place they belong is wonderful,” said Inter Milan fan Michele.

Reigning Italian champions Inter got off to the perfect start, treating the fans to a 4-0 victory over Genoa for their return.

Outside the stadium, footage showed a mural of last season’s top scorer and star player Romelo Lukaku vandalised with messages reading: ‘Traitor,’ and ‘Sell out,’ after his move to Chelsea.

I repeat, it’s been 10 years since we won anything and despite that we were filling the stadium. Now it is really a liberation. It was even worse because last season ended with the victory of the league title which we couldn’t celebrate inside the stadium.”
