Residents of Bologna took to the streets to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the Bologna Massacre on Monday.

On August 2, 1980, members of a neo-fascist terrorist organisation detonated a bomb in the Bologna Centrale train station, killing 85 people and injuring hundreds of others.

“Forty-one years have gone by since the bloodiest attack took place in Italy during peacetime. Former Italian President of Republic Sandro Pertini called it ‘the most criminal undertaking of the history of the Republic’,” said Paolo Bolognesi, President of the Association of families of the victims of the Bologna massacre.

“It involved tens of people and numerous [elements of] apparatus, it was organised by the heads of the P2 (Propaganda Due) Masonic Lodge, protected by the heads of the secret services and executed by fascist terrorists,” added Bolognesi.

As part of the commemorative event, a procession was held through the city and a rally was held at the site of the deadly incident, with flowers being laid alongside plaques containing the names of victims.

The event was attended by the Italian Minister of Interior Marta Cartabia, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ivan Scalfarotto and Emilia-Romagna Governor Stefano Bonaccini.

The attack was has been blamed on a group called Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari (NAR), who has denied any kind of involvement in the bombing.
