Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL) Maurizio Landini condemned the storm on the union’s headquarters, calling it a ‘fascist act,’ in Rome on Sunday.
Thousands of people took to the Italian capital streets on Saturday against the expansion of the Italian COVID19 health pass. A group of protesters tried to reach the prime minister’s office while another - reportedly the far-right organisation Forza Nuova - stormed the headquarters of CGIL.
“I believe that the future of our country is at stake, the quality of the future of our country because the democracy is founded on the right to work and on the social justice,” Landini said, adding that the union believes that compulsory vaccination for workers is “the best choice.”
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Maurizio Landini, Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (Italian): “The union is being attacked, because, despite its limits and defects, in the story of our country, it has been a decisive subject for the reforms and the democracy. I would like to remember everyone that, if terrorism and ostracism have been defeated in Italy, it is thanks to the workers’ movement and to the union movement.”
SOT, Maurizio Landini, Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (Italian): “I believe, as I said, I thank the law enforcement for their job they have made, I really express my closeness and solidarity to the wounded officers, including also the ones that have been wounded here, and I believe that the police and all the investigative bodies, including also the judiciary, have to play their role. There have been some crimes, there have been serious violations of our laws and democratic rules and I hope that the responsible ones pay and are condemned.”
SOT, Maurizio Landini, Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (Italian): “I hope that Saturday, the 16th, the square in Rome, which we will choose together with CISL and UIL, will be full of people and crowded and that, this week, shall be a week, as happened here this morning and as in all the Italian cities in front of all the CGIL sites, of a big democratic mobilization. Because we need to unite the people, we need that no one stays behind, and that no one feels alone. I hope that this manifestation and this mobilization may establish all the conditions in order to finally make all the reforms within the budget law, which we are waiting for a very long time. As trade union movement we have some proposal very precise which we intend to sustain with the government in our country, with all ours counterparties.”
SOT, Maurizio Landini, Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (Italian): “I believe that this has to be used with intelligence. As known, CGIL, CISL, and UIL since the beginning, affirmed that for us the best choice continues to be the vaccination obligation for everyone, I believe that this is the way to follow. I also believe that it is necessary for the intelligence to avoid that this will be the cause of a division in the workplaces and in the country.”
SOT, Maurizio Landini, Secretary-General of the Italian General Confederation of Labour (Italian): “I believe that the future of our country is at stake, the quality of the future of our country because the democracy is founded on the right to work and on the social justice. I believe that this is really at stake and since we are at a decisive point, at an opportunity that our country will not have in other moments, I think that it is absolutely necessary that the workforce shall be put in a condition to be the protagonist of the future and of the change of our country.”
