Italy: Di Maio announces Sorrento Declaration following G20 ministerial meeting

Following the G20 ministerial meeting on trade and investment in Sorrento on Tuesday, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio announced the Sorrento Declaration.
“The Sorrento declaration lays the foundation from multidimensional response at the level of the WTO,” he stressed.
According to Di Maio, the declaration includes reforms regarding environmental protection, the promotion of digital trade, the reduction of costs for trade in services and the introduction of transparent and efficient regulatory and administrative frameworks for investments, the import and export of participating countries as well as the fair distribution of vaccination doses.

SOT, Luigi Di Maio, Italian Foreign Minister (Italian): “I am happy to inform you that today we approved the Sorrento declaration. Our message is very clear, trade has to ensure a better future for people, protect the planet and provide prosperity for all of you.”

SOT, Luigi Di Maio, Italian Foreign Minister (Italian): “The Sorrento declaration lays the foundation from multidimensional response at the level of the WTO including the adoption of trade facilitation measures, limiting restrictions to exports and the expansion of production, considering also international property rights, that are still being debated, so that everybody will have access to vaccines.”

SOT, Luigi Di Maio, Italian Foreign Minister (Italian): “Thanks to the work of all those people being involved, it has been succesful. The relaunch of multilateralism, the fact that the Sorrento declaration could be approved means that all the countries around the table converge on the need to modify and introduce some reforms. This could not be taken for granted at all at the beginning of the negotiations.”

SOT, Luigi Di Maio, Italian Foreign Minister (Italian): “We all agree on the fact that now the rules of the game need to be the same for all players and this is also a principle, that is very important at the moment on the multilateral level. Because even in the last few years and months there have been very diverging opinions.”
