Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi spoke at the opening ceremony of the 7th edition of the Rome Mediterranean Dialogue (MED) in Rome on Friday, addressing regional and international challenges, including migratory flows and transitioning towards a greener sustainable economy.

“This meeting is the occasion to reinforce the cooperation on a key area for our country. The Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is not only a geographical area, it is also a group of connections: Social, economic and cultural,” stated Draghi.

The annual high level-initiative forum promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Farnesina) and the Italian Institute for International Political Studies) ISPI runs from December 2 to 4 this year under the title ‘Leveraging Transitions.’

“Alone, we cannot control the migration movements which this year resulted in 63,000 arrivals, six times more than in 2019. We need an increased involvement of the European countries in the Mediterranean,” remarked Draghi.

“The political stability in countries of origin is closely connected to migration management. Italy supports the peace process and political transition in Libya strongly,” he went on to say.

MED started in 2015, and has become the global hub for high–level dialogues on the broader Mediterranean engaging leaders of Mediterranean governments, business, media and civil society.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “It is a great pleasure to be here with you for the seventh edition of the Mediterranean Dialogues. I want to thank the Foreign Minister Di Maio, the ISPI ((Italian Institute for International Political Studies) and the Farnesina (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy) for the organisation. This meeting is the occasion to reinforce the cooperation on a key area for our country. The Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is not only a geographical area, it is also a group of connections: social, economic and cultural.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Think of what happened the last month of March when the Ever Given ship blocked the traffic in the Suez Canal. In six days, that block caused the increase of the price of shipment of oil products to the double.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Let’s also think of migrants that often land on our shores and often originates far away from the sea. Alone, we cannot control the migration movements which this year resulted in 63,000 arrivals, six times more than in 2019. We need an increased involvement of the European countries in the Mediterranean. Italy continues to promote a European handling based on an effective balance between responsibility and solidarity. We want to act together to stop illegal routes. We want to protect the weakest also by promoting humanitarian corridors from most vulnerable countries.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “The political stability in countries of origin is closely connected to the management of migration. Italy strongly supports the peace process and the political transition in Libya.”
