A bus driver got 25 children to safety after his vehicle caught fire inside a tunnel near Varenna, northern Italy, on Tuesday.

Mauro Mascetti, the driver and an employee of the Como Red Cross Committee, managed to evacuate all the passengers before the bus burst into flames. Seven teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The children were on their way to Livigno for a summer camp when a tyre exploded and the bus caught fire inside the Fiumelatte tunnel on the motorway between Lecco and Valtellina.

Five fire brigade teams were called out to extinguish the fire after the driver failed to put out the flames himself.
