Italy: Investigation underway after man dies at huge illegal rave near Rome

Police vehicles arrived in the countryside in Viterbo, a province near Rome, on Thursday, where a huge illegal rave took place over the previous five days.

Officers are investigating the death of 25-year-old Gianluca Santiago, found dead in nearby Lake Mezzano on Monday.

Thousands of people coming from all over Europe, with many from France, participated in the event, called ‘Teknival Space Travel.’ Some attendees could still be seen staying in camper vans in the rave field, now filled with rubbish bags.

According to social media a second person may have died during the event but this has not been confirmed by police. Several dogs reportedly died from heat and thirst.

According to local news, many participants needed treatment for acute alcoholic intoxication and one of them tested positive for COVID-19, raising concerns that the event may cause outbreaks of the virus.
