Italy: Locals angry as NATO military drills damage landscape in nature reserve

NATO military drills taking place in the Punta Bianca nature reserve are angering locals accusing them of damaging the landscape and beaches. Footage shows the drills taking place in Sicily on Friday.

Claudio Lombardo the Provincial President of the Mareamico Environmentalist Association showcased some of the damage being done in the reserve and discussed their issues with it.

“Look what is here this is a crater, real battles take place here, this area is very fragile and the coastal strip has retreated because the vibrations caused by the exercises and the stresses of the craters have produced this retreat of the beaches,” Lombardo explained.

Discussing the nature reserve and the exercises happening in the reserve Lombardo said, “a military polygon does not leave us calm and happy, the two activities are absolutely incompatible.”

Environmental groups have battled with the military for years in an attempt to end the practice of the drills taking place in the reserve.
