Locals reacted to the Italian government’s decision of banning large cruise ships from entering Venice waters as of August 1, as seen on Wednesday in Venice.

On July 13, the Italian Ministry of Development and Sustainable transport passed a decree banning any cruise ship weighing over 25,000 tons to sail through San Marco canal and the Giudecca canal.

“I think that people who want to come to Venice have to come in a more mindful way, I mean, spend more time here, maybe in less of a rush and maybe less great numbers, I mean, if you space out the crowds, they get to enjoy the town better,” said Leif-Erik Hannikainen, a resident.

The move to ban the large cruise ships from sailing directly into the Venice lagoon aims to protect the national monument and the ecosystem, which was swiftly done after UNESCO stated that Venice would be placed on its endangered list.

Roko Cupic, an official tourist guide of Venice, commented, “I think it’s about time. You always must put the environment and the security before money-making, moreover, the locals have been asking for quite a long time, so it’s a good thing.”

The biggest cruise ships will now be diverted towards the city’s industrial port of Marghera.
