Rescue operations were still ongoing in in the Sicilian town of Ravanusa on Monday as authorities continued searching for two missing people under the rubble caused by Saturday’s explosion.

Late on Saturday, four houses collapsed, and three were damaged in a blast likely caused by a gas leak from the town’s pipes.

At least seven people were confirmed dead due to the explosion, two were found alive under the rubble and two are still missing.

According to local sources, five days before the blast, the town’s methane network system underwent a routine maintenance check which did not show any anomaly.

An investigation on the causes of the explosion is ongoing.

SOT, Carmelo D’Angelo, Mayor of Ravanusa (Italian): “My country is crying for seven victims; there are still two missing. A little while ago we had a briefing with the firefighters to identify the point suggested by the family to locate the area inside of the building where we could find other people. There will be time to understand the dynamics and responsibilities of what happened and then it will take more time to be close to the families of the victims.”

SOT, Giuseppe Merendino, Commander of the fire brigade Agrigento (Italian): “9 of the 11 missing people have been recovered, unfortunately, of these only two people are alive and seven are dead so far. There are still two missing to complete the search operation.”

SOT, Giuseppe Merendino, Commander of the fire brigade Agrigento (Italian): “We have had indications on where they could be we hope to be able to find them within the day.”
