A bronze statue depicting a female gleaner from a 19th-century Italian poem has sparked controversy in the small town of Sapri, as seen on Monday.
The statue, dressed in a sheer dress, pays homage to Luigi Mercantini’s poem, ‘The Gleaner of Sapri.’ The work references the failed attempt at an anti-Bourbon insurrection led by one of the first Italian socialist thinkers, Carlo Pisacane.
Locals of the town shared their reactions to the newly unveiled statue, but none could find any wrongdoings in the sculpted figure.
“What do I think about this figure? The butt is like gold: touching it brings good luck,” said a resident.
Another local said the sexism card was “an unfair controversy.”
“Italy is the country of art, and it should feel more comfortable with naked statues. When I saw it in the picture, it seemed more excessive, but seeing it in person, it is just beautiful.”
The statue rose controversy on social media, with detractors saying it was a sexist depiction of the poem’s protagonist.

SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “What do I think about this figure? The butt is like gold: touching it brings good luck.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “I don’t see anything scandalous about it. Those who make a controversy do not know what they are saying. If so, we should remove all the beautiful works of art we have, as many are naked.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “The town has welcomed the statue very well, above all, because we feel it is ours and even more so because it is located in the city centre. And then, we realised that it is a very strong attraction, especially now that there are all these controversies related to its back side.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “An unfair controversy, this is a beautiful statue. Italy is the country of art, and it should feel more comfortable with naked statues. When I saw it in the picture, it seemed more excessive, but seeing it in person, it is just beautiful.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “As a woman, I didn’t feel offended by the statue, I don’t see any sexist portrayals in it.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “There were a lot of people when the statue was unveiled, everyone welcomed it well, the ‘back’ was also seen, without objection.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “For me, it could represent an allegory of past, present and future. This statue is an incitement to the fighting force, the strength to solve today’s political, economic and environmental problems.”
SOT, Sapri local (Italian): “Nothing special shines through the dress. I see it is quite simple. The statue is dressed right.”
