A thousand-year-old olive tree old was wiped out by the huge fire blaze which hit the western area of Sardinia near the village of Cuglieri on Wednesday.

Expert teams and botanists were seen on site covering the olive tree with a tape and assessing the damage.

The 16.5 metres (54 feet) high tree dubbed ‘the patriarch,’ was one of the oldest trees in Italy, registered on the list of monumental trees by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural and Forest Policy.
