Members of the Ukrainian diaspora held a protest against the Russian government in Rome on Thursday amid ongoing tensions at the Russia-Ukraine border.
During the gathering, protesters held Ukrainian flags and posters denouncing Russian President Vladimir Putin, as they listened to various speakers.
“We ask that what we are witnessing ceases immediately without the need for weapons. Dialogue, diplomacy and freedom are necessary,” one protester stated.
In late January Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that messages about threats of war with Russia had increased panic inside the country, and expressed concern that such rumours may damage the Ukrainian economy.
Russia has denied accusations that it is gathering forces at the border to invade Ukraine.
SOT, Protester (Italian): “In 2014, no one thought that Russia could invade Crimea and Donbass. No one.”
SOT, Protester (Italian): “The Ukrainians are prepared to defend themselves because we all have our friends and family at home.”
SOT, Protester (Italian): “We ask that what we are witnessing ceases immediately without the need for weapons. Dialogue, diplomacy and freedom are necessary.”
SOT, Miroslava, Protester (Italian): “We defend our country and our land as it is normal to do. Unfortunately we have 15,000 people who have died as a result of this war.”
SOT, Alessia, Protester (Italian): “It is not a war that affects only us Ukrainians. The Russian invasion threatens all of Europe. Putin is used to threatening European countries with gas. European democracy seems under Russian control because he constantly turns gas on and off.”
SOT, Gibet, Protester (Italian): “We ask Europe to be with us and in solidarity. If they enter, they will make two wars: one in Ukraine and then they will also enter Europe.”
