A Roman-era fast food outlet, then known as a thermopolium, has re-opened for the public to see this week, with queues of visitors forming for the Pompeii archaeological attraction on Friday.
The thermopolium forms part of the Pompeii excavation site and was first discovered two years ago.
“This tour was very interesting, I have never been to the Pompeii excavations and I was very impressed, amazed and pleasantly surprised,” said one visitor of the site.
“I was very pleased to visit the new part that was discovered a few years ago, like in this case the fast food, in fact you can see a table with holes where the food was,” added the visitor.
Archaeologists uncovered an impressive well-preserved counter featuring frescoes on the site, with still life depictions which include Nereid riding a sea-horse, gladiators, a dog and a rooster.
The archaeological team also found various animal and human bones near the counter.
Pompeii, now a mass archaeological excavation site, was once a functioning city which become engulfed in pumice and ash following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year of 79 AD.
Lack of air and moisture helped to preserve large parts of the Roman city in a nearly perfect state until it was discovered in 1748.

SOT, Pompeii excavations visitor (Italian): “We are delighted to have seen this new area open to the public, which I find very interesting. I found it was very kind of all the people who helped us to understand everything we saw and found, a very trained and kind staff. It is an incredible place, despite the heat it is worth it.”

SOT, Pompeii excavations visitor (Italian): “I am very impressed by this new place that was opened yesterday, that we were not even aware of. It was a stroke of luck because it is beautiful, the frescoes are beautiful, I am very happy.”

SOT, Pompeii excavations visitor (Italian): “We were waiting for a long time to see it, so it has a particular effect because you can see the frescoes that are perfectly preserved. Therefore it’s very different from those we usually see. It makes a beautiful effect we were looking forward to.”

SOT, Pompeii excavations visitor (Italian): “Undoubtedly it is very well preserved, consequently we do not have to do fantasise, we can already understand what this place was like, that it was a diner. The most impressive thing are the paintings that were made with organic material, to find them preserved is a rarity, certainly the state of conservation is impressive.”
