The French national football team was enthusiastic ahead of Sunday’s UEFA Nations League 2021 finals against Spain, following a narrow 3-2 win against Belgium, as seen in Turin on Friday.

After missing two goals at half-time, France overcame the pressure with goals scored by Karim Benzema and Theo Hernandez and a penalty realised by Kylian Mbappe.

“We started wrong, but we didn’t give up the mission, we spoke to each other, and we returned with our real intentions,” said Mbappe.

The player said such a win ‘gives confidence to the team, to the staff’, adding, “Now we must win in the finals because if we don’t, it will be frustrating.”

SOT, Kylian Mbappe, Player of France National team (French): “We were losing 2-0, we started wrong, but we didn’t give up the mission, we spoke to each other and we returned with our real intentions. We played on their pitch, but we created moments and w scored early without losing hope, and then we scored again, it’s so crazy.”
Reporter (French): “It’s cool!”
Player (French): “Yes! It’s good, it gives confidence to the team, to the staff. Now we must win in the finals because if we don’t it will be frustrating.”

SOT, Raphael Varane, Player of France National team (French): “I think we pressed better in team (together). This is a little bit new for us so we need a bit more experience but in the attitude we were more ‘biting’ in both half times and we were pushing more, which helped us being more dangerous and to recuperate the ball possession on the pitch and then we were mortal, we went till the end and tear them off.”
Reporter (French): “Team of warriors!”
Raphael Varane (French): “Yes, this is how we have to be.”

SOT, Didier Deschamps, France head coach (French): “We played well at the start of the first half, the first 20 minutes. After that we struggled, we stayed behind and could not push ahead. We lacked a bit of aggressiveness, but it was also the quality of Belgium’s game which hurt us. I think that 2-0 at half time was a bit unfair for how the whole first half went, but it shows that our first 20 minutes were not enough. Then we had a reaction and we showed pride, starting from our front three who were all over the place and who made our rivals make many mistakes, allowing us to overturn a really difficult situation.”

SOT, Didier Deschamps, France head coach (French): “Since you are interested in stats, look at our results in official matches. How many did France win? We don’t win them all, we don’t always win 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0, Okay, we were eliminated by Switzerland, but France is always up there.”

SOT, Didier Deschamps, France head coach (French): “Kylian (Mbappe) never doubted himself, and I always made sure to be there for him, to support him. I saw his determination, he had great intentions for the Euro. He was not at his best at our latest training camp, he had to miss our second and third match for injury. There are a lot of demands, a lot of attention on Kylian, but I always said that France is stronger with Kylian.”
