Japan: Emperor, PM attend ceremony marking 76 years since end of WWII

Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga were among those present at a ceremony marking 76 years since the end of the Second World War in Tokyo on Sunday.
Attendees approached the stage one by one to lay yellow flowers in memory of the conflict’s victims.

“Looking back on the long period of post-war peace, reflecting on our past and bearing in mind the feelings of deep remorse, I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never again be repeated,” said Emperor Naruhito.

On August 15 in 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender of Japan which was formally signed on September 2.

The Japanese army committed numerous atrocities before and during WWII, with many political and military leaders later being convicted for war crimes.
