Japan: 'Extremely emotional' - tearful IPC spox on arrival of evacuated Afghan Paralympians

The two evacuated Afghan Paralympic athletes, Zakia Khudadadi and Hossain Rasouli, had been warmly welcomed at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Village, IPC spokesperson Craig Spencer said at a press conference in Tokyo on Sunday.

“As you can imagine the meeting is extremely emotional, there was a lot of tears in everyone in the room. It was remarkable, it really was a remarkable meeting. Having seen images of athletes being evacuated on the airplane on Monday, to see them in person in front of us safe and well in the Paralympic village is something I don’t think will ever forget,” Spencer said, pausing after getting emotional.

The athletes arrived in Tokyo following their safe evacuation from Afghanistan to Paris last weekend.
