Researchers of Fukuoka Institute of Technology are exploring ways to extract hydrogen from aluminium waste to produce a sustainable fuel.
The professors and students working on the project believe that the new fuel will recycle aluminium particles discarded by industrial manufacturers and help create a fuel free from CO2 emissions.
Professor Kenji Takahara, who leads the study, said on Wednesday that although aluminium normally has a strong reaction with water, the activated aluminium particles used by the researchers are ‘very safe’ thanks to a hydroxide film covering it.
Takahara’s students have since began working on the project, testing and improving their first e-bicycle based on hydrogen energy.
“This bicycle is a small electric vehicle powered by hydrogen. By filling the aluminium with water, hydrogen is generated, and the generated hydrogen is converted into electricity to power the bicycle,” student Takumi Iwashita said.
Iwashita explained that the generation of hydrogen energy does not produce any waste which makes it a sustainable alternative for the future.
“It is currently being used in bicycles, but I hope that it will be used in cars, airplanes, and other more practical applications, and become one of the power sources that are indispensable for the transportation of many people,” the student concluded.
