Residents expressed their anger and fear in Wajima, a city in the Ishikawa Prefecture, on Thursday, one day after the latest ballistic missile launched by North Korea allegedly fell inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, not far from the coast.
“My family members are fishermen, and they are out on a boat fishing, so we are not safe, and I’m worried and scared. I don’t know what to do. I want it to stop, or rather, I don’t want them to do that,” said Saki, a resident.
According to local sources, North Korea launched the missile on Wednesday from a train located in a mountainous area in central North Korea towards the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.
“I didn’t think it was that close. Even though it’s the Sea of Japan, it’s always been farther away, so yesterday’s was too close. We were scared because it was so close to Hegura Island. If they made a mistake, we’d be in danger, too,” said Hamasaki, another resident.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has condemned the act as ‘simply outrageous’ and a ‘threat to the region’s peace and security.’
