Several hundred protesters marched in Amman on Friday, to voice their opposition to the signing of the ‘Water for Energy’ deal.

The declaration of intent between Jordan and Israel will start the process of a feasibility study regarding the joint energy and water project.

“Every week we go out to convey a message to the regime that we reject all these agreements, the gas agreement, the water agreement, the Wadi Araba agreement. We will not make our homeland a pawn in the hands of the Zionist entity. All these agreements are against the sovereignty of this country,” said Reda al-Farran, one of the protesters.

The agreement was brokered by the United Arab Emirates and signed at a Dubai Expo event on Monday, in the presence of US Climate Envoy John Kerry and UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.

The ‘Water for Energy’ deal stipulates the construction of a major solar power plant by an Emirati company, in Jordan, to generate electricity for Israel. A desalination plant established in Israel will also send water to Jordan.

Under the deal, the solar power plant will provide Israel with 200 megawatts of electricity, while Israel will supply Jordan with up to 200 million cubic meters of water annually.

SOT, Imad al-Malhi, Member of the Jordanian Popular Unity Party (Arabic): “This march, for the second consecutive Friday, is being carried out by the popular movement in rejection of the agreement signed by the Jordanian government with the Zionist entity on the subject of the water. We are convinced that these agreements will shackle Jordan with more dependence on the Zionist entity. We have many alternatives, and the Jordanian people reject these agreements.”

SOT, Reda al-Farran, Demonstrator (Arabic): “Every week we go out to convey a message to the regime that we reject all these agreements, the gas agreement, the water agreement, the Wadi Araba agreement. We will not make our homeland a pawn in the hands of the Zionist entity. All these agreements are against the sovereignty of this country. Why is this government making these deals that are against the will of this people?”

SOT, Sufian al-Tal, Demonstrator (Arabic): “What is going on in the Jordanian arena is more than treachery. Amending the constitution is treason, amending the elections is treason, and the amendments in all aspects of life they (the government) are doing are treason and we must raise our voice loudly. No to treason, no to amending the constitution, no to the Gas agreement, no to the water agreement, no to selling our Arab sun to Zionism. This is the broad line that we hope that all the masses will work for and chant for, God willing.”
