The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature received 20 out of 60 endangered Arabian oryx at the Shawmari Wildlife Reserve in Zarqa, arriving from the Abu Dhabi Environment authority in the UAE on Sunday.

The cooperation is part of the joint efforts to establish a vital and substantial Arabian oryx herd in the Shawmari Wildlife Reserve by diversifying genetic resources and rehabilitating pastures and natural habitats.

“This is the delivery of Arabian oryx to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The first delivery was in Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed project to resettle the Arabian oryx in Wadi Rum,” said Ahmed Al-Dhaheri, head of Wildlife Reserve Management Unit in Abu Dhabi.

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature established the Shawmari Wildlife Reserve in 1975 to act as a place to resettle endangered or locally extinct wild animals.

It covers an area of 22-square-kilometre (8.5 sq m). It is located 110 kilometres (68 miles) east of the capital Amman, in the middle of the country’s eastern desert, named after a nearby valley.

The study team at the Royal Society will carry out the necessary studies for plant distribution in the reserve. And if it turns out that they need a bigger number, the Abu Dhabi Environment Authority will send another 20 Arabian oryx.”
