Airborne troops from the Russian Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) peacekeeping forces, deployed to Kazakhstan, were marching in convoys from the Zhetygen airfield. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Defence Ministry on Sunday.
According to the ministry, early airborne units carried out airlifting of military transport aviation from airfields in Russia.
After unloading, the convoy made a march to the places of deployment, where, after clarifying the situation, the servicemen began to perform tasks to protect vital facilities and social infrastructure facilities.
The department clarified that the air group created by the Ministry of Defense consists of more than 70 Il-76 aircraft and five An-124 aircraft. It transfers units of the Russian contingent of the CSTO peacekeeping forces to Kazakhstan around the clock.
Unrest has sparked in the country after unauthorised rallies began in the Mangistau region on Sunday, as prices of LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) rose from 60 to 120 tenge (€0.12 to €0.24; $0.14 to $0.28) per litre since January 1. The price hike came after the government lifted price controls on LPG, citing a need to liberalise the market.
Tokayev accepted the cabinet’s official resignation on Wednesday. However, the government will continue functioning until a new cabinet of ministers is formed.
Authorities have also announced several restored price caps on LPG, commonly used in cars, in response to the unrest. Representatives of local media, referring to entrepreneurs, estimate the amount of damage to retail chains at more than 92.3 billion tenge ($212 million).
The country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the detention of 5,100 people on Sunday, citing their involvement in recent riots. The department reported the death of 16 security officials. Another 1,300 police and special services employees were injured.
According to the republic’s Ministry of Health, more than 1,000 people have been injured during the ongoing protests and almost 400 were hospitalised.
On Thursday, the Collective Security Council started sending forces to Kazakhstan to assist with law enforcement at the request of President Tokayev.
