Meditation and wild dancing are two activities that have no reason to go their separate ways, at least that’s how it is understood by the Bolivian Maque Pereyra, creator of Yoggaton, a new practice that has begun to gain an increasing number of followers.

Footage filmed on Thursday shows Pereyra guiding a group of students during a Yoggaton class in the city of Sucre. The group gathers at sunset to begin performing breathing exercises and different yoga postures, which gradually merge with reggaeton.

“Yoggaton is the intersection between yoga and reggaeton, it is spiritual activism, pleasure activism, decolonial feminism, and also intense ‘twerking.’ How all this came about is because I realised, a couple of years ago, that these languages have always been in my body,” explained yoggaton creator Maque Pereyra.

Pereyra defines herself as a “multidisciplinary artist and pleasure activist,” and has been spreading the Yoggaton movement in Bolivia and abroad for five years.

Amid constant activism that fights for rights, Maque says that Yoggaton can function as an instance that highlights pleasure and happiness.

“The idea of sharing [among people] the Yoggaton is to generate these spaces of regeneration because I believe that within the activist [feminist] struggles, there can be wear and tear, so the Yoggaton is precisely this place to meet, to enjoy, to meet from the activism of pleasure, which in essence is the vindication of pleasure, of happiness, of joy, as an instrument of struggle and activism”.

The Yoggaton is not only accessible to residents of the city of Sucre, classes and courses are also available online.
