Multimedia art, photographs and historical artefacts on exhibit near the DMZ have turned a former US military base into a venue advocating peace as filmed on Tuesday.
Artists contributing to the exhibition commented on the meaning behind the installation.
“Many have forgotten why the division even occurred and many consider it simply no more or less than an historical fact. But through art and culture, I hope such concepts can be observed more comfortably, accepted, and contemplated, so we as a nation may consider how we should move forward,” explained one of the artists Lee Seung-geun.
The location of the exhibition is just as meaningful as the art inside, as the Camp Greaves spot where the artwork is being displayed has a rich and interesting history.
“The US used this as the garrison of Camp Greaves for about 50 years. It was then returned to South Korea, and in 2013, Gyeonggi Province, while preserving its original form, transformed the camp into the only facility within the DMZ where history, culture, and art can be experienced,” remarked Gallery Greaves DMZ Camp employee Shin Cheol-hee.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Lee Seung-geun, Multimedia artist (Korean): “I think art is like light. This ammunition depot used to be dark. It was pitch black and nothing could be seen. But when shed with light, things began to come to our notice and people began to have an interest. Similarly, what I think art can do is bring interest to a subject and allow people to more comfortably approach and observe the subject.”
