La Noria guardian protects locals with machete neighbourhood watch

Estela Hernandez is being touted as the guardian of La Noria after keeping residents of the Oaxaca neighbourhood safe with her machete.
In the face of a crime-riddled neighbourhood, resident Laura Estela Hernandez, 58, has taken security into her own hands in the neighbourhood of La Noria, as seen in footage filmed on Tuesday.
Known as the ‘Guardian of La Noria,’ Hernandez has been walking the streets with her machete for more than 10 years, monitoring street activity and driving away thieves in the absence of law enforcement.
“In reality, we do not have police personnel guarding the streets of La Noria, only comrade Laura with a machete, there is not even a weapon for us to defend ourselves with,” commented one resident.
Hernandez emphasised that the purpose of the machete is to intimidate rather than actually cause damage to perpetrators.
“We are doing the work by walking with a machete, not to kill, but to scare away the criminals so that they understand that they have no business coming to the neighbourhood of La Noria”, stated Hernandez.
In recent years Mexico’s law enforcement has faced challenges caused by the influence of drug cartels, with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador favouring the funding of the National Guard over the Federal Police in a bid to make streets safer.
