The life of the inhabitants of eastern La Palma was seen continue as usual, while the Cumbre Vieja volcano remains active in the western part of the island.

The cloudiness of Brena Alta contrasts with the anticyclone in the towns of El Paso and Santa Cruz de La Palma, where the sun shines bright at the beaches.

Residents of the more commercial and less volcanically-affected part of the island have been preparing for Christmas by putting up street lights.

Laura Moreno, a shop assistant in Santa Cruz de La Palma said that the eruption has been felt in the city “at the level of seismic movement and some ash that has fallen, but nothing more.”

However, he agrees that the eruption has caused enormous economic damage to the whole island.

“On an economic level, it is causing us a lot of problems because the engine of the economy is in this area, right in the area that the volcano has taken away. Tourism is not arriving, well, a type of tourism is arriving, but not the kind of tourism that would boost the island’s economy,” he said.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on 19 September for the first time in 50 years. Since then, lava has destroyed more than 2,200 buildings and caused the evacuation of more than 7,000 people.
