Fragment of an old wooden boat was found on Bolderaja beach near Daugavgriva lighthouse in Latvia.
Footage shows a historical artefact with tourists gathering to observing a unique find.
Archaeologist Arturs Thomsons suggested the boat was carried to the shore by waves and sand.
“These are very interesting processes when in one place the sand is washed up and in another place, it gets washed off. This is why sometimes miracles are discovered after a hundred years,” he said.
Thomson estimates there is no sense to extract the ship, as “preservation of such wooden structures is very expensive” and a complex process.
“It would have to be dismantled piece by piece, and each part would have to be soaked in chemicals for a long time to absorb protection against fungus and micro-organisms,” the archaeologist explained.

SOT, Arturs Thomsons, archaeologist (Latvian): “This is very interesting coastal erosion in Daugavgriva. In the last century dunes have moved there for very long distances. These are very interesting processes, where in one place the sand washes up and in another place it washes out. That is why sometimes miracles are discovered after a hundred years.”

SOT, Arturs Thomsons, archaeologist (Latvian): “Preservation of such wooden structures is very expensive. It would have to be dismantled piece by piece and each part would have to be soaked in chemicals for a long time to soak up protection against fungus and micro-organisms. I don’t know if anyone in Latvia has the money to afford it. The most famous example is of course the Vasa ship in Stockholm. Which is also regularly treated to prevent it from starting to decompose.”
