Latvia: Men's national 3x3 basketball team returns home with Olympic gold medals

The players of Latvia’s men’s 3x3 basketball team returned home with gold of the Tokyo Olympics, Riga, Friday.

They were greeted with smiles, applause, and congratulations by more than 200 fans led by President of the Latvian Olympic Committee Georges Tikmer and President of the Latvian Basketball Union Raimond Vejonis.

Locals could be seen smiling, whistling, and clapping to the champions with relatives and friends hugging and lifting the winners.

The champions shared their feelings after the final and noted that they did not expect an easy victory.

“We wanted to achieve some results, but the group tournament showed that it would not be easy. We have had both good and bad games. But thanks to the glorious Oscar-winning game that happened one evening, we were able to return as a real team of Riga. We showed who is who, and in the end, here it is [gold medals] in our hands,” Olympic champion of the Latvian national 3x3 basketball team Agnis Chavars said.

The Latvian national team clashed with the Russian Olympic Committee in the final. The match ended with the 21:18 victory for Latvia.

Inaugural 3x3 basketball made its debut as a new Olympic discipline at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
