Lebanon: 'God help this country' - PM-designate Hariri steps down after talks with Aoun

Lebanon Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri stepped down on Thursday after meeting Lebanese President Michel Aoun, nine months after accepting an offer to form the crisis-ridden country’s government.

“I met with the president, and we had a consultation on the issue of the government, during the speech there were amendments requested by the president and considered essential for him in the [government] formation,” Hariri said.

“For that reason, I have stepped down from forming the government. God help this country,” the three-time prime minister added.

The caretaker prime minister resigned last October, months after a massive explosion in Beirut killed over 211 people, after which Hariri was named to form a government in November, while Hassan Diab stayed as caretaker Prime Minister.

Lebanon is on the threshold of general elections scheduled to take place in the spring of 2022.
