Lebanon: Guterres promises UN support in pursuit of 'stable peaceful Lebanon' in Beirut visit

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Lebanese political leaders during his trip to Beirut, Monday, and promised support to help the country amid its economic and political crisis
“Our strategies need to be coherent, our methods aligned in pursuit of a common goal: a stable peaceful Lebanon that offers again hope and opportunity to all its people,” the UN chief said while speaking to the Lebanese Parliament, after having met with Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Parliament and Prime Minister Najib Miqati.
Guterres continued, “The truth is that the Lebanese people are today suffering tremendously and that creates naturally a great responsibility for Lebanese leaders to come together. I mean this is not the moment for divisions to be explored.”
On Sunday, the UN chief held a meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun and visited the site of the 2020 port explosion to pay his respects.

But let’s be clear, Lebanon also deserves now the same kind of solidarity that was given to the Syrian refugees and it deserves a massive mobilisation of resources to support your economic recovery.”
