Sidon residents queued up to buy bread on Thursday, as the fuel crisis forced many restaurants and bakeries to close doors until further notice.
Locals could be seen attempting to buy large amounts of bread as many were afraid that the crisis would deepen soon.
“People used to line up to buy gasoline, but it seems that the gasoline crisis has ended and the bread crisis will begin, or it has already begun, the crises will multiply,” one of the customers said.
“Look at how people cry at the doors of the bakeries, they have nothing to eat. In the morning someone came and cried because he did not have money to buy one bundle of bread, so I gave him two” said bakery owner Mahmoud Khalil.
Starting from Thursday, the Lebanese central bank’s decision to end fuel subsidies has come into force, allowing Lebanon to support foreign reserves during the ongoing economic crisis.
The Head of the Bakery Owners Syndicate, Ali Ibrahim, had announced that the price of a bread bundle would rise to 6 or 7 thousand Lebanese pounds (4 to 4,5 USD / 3,38 to 3,95 euros) after the central bank’s decision.
